Race Around Rwanda is a 1,000 km self-supported ultra cycling race that takes riders across the spectacular landscapes of Rwanda, known as the Land of a Thousand Hills. Starting and finishing in Kigali, the route features approximately 19,000 metres of elevation gain and a challenging mix of paved roads and gravel terrain.
With around 48% off-road sections, the course winds through rolling hills, remote villages, lush countryside and mountainous landscapes. The constant changes in elevation make this a demanding challenge, requiring strong climbing ability, careful pacing and solid endurance. A gravel bike with tyres of at least 35 mm is recommended, although a mountain bike is also suitable.
Race Around Rwanda follows a strict self-supported format. Riders must navigate independently and manage their own equipment, nutrition, water and accommodation. Personal support vehicles and outside assistance are not permitted, although commercially available services such as shops, restaurants and bike mechanics can be used along the route.
The race features four checkpoints and a 163-hour time limit, giving participants just under seven days to complete the course. Efficient sleep management, nutrition planning and mechanical preparation are essential to make it to the finish in Kigali.
Beyond the physical challenge, Race Around Rwanda offers a unique opportunity to discover East Africa’s landscapes and local culture from the saddle, making it a memorable adventure for experienced ultra-distance cyclists and bikepackers.
