The Unknown Race is a self-supported ultra-cycling adventure where navigation is part of the challenge. Starting and finishing in the same location, riders cover approximately 1,000 km, connecting a series of secret checkpoints whose locations are revealed progressively throughout the event. With no fixed route to follow, participants must make their own decisions about roads, terrain, resupply and the most efficient way between checkpoints.
The fifth edition takes place in Grenoble, France, placing riders at the gateway to the French Alps. The surrounding region offers an extraordinary mix of mountain roads, steep climbs, valleys and remote countryside, making route planning just as important as physical endurance.
The race begins with the first coordinates being shared one hour before the start. At each checkpoint, riders receive the location of the next one. There are between four and eight checkpoints in total, although the exact number is also kept secret. The final checkpoint sends riders back to the original starting location.
The event follows a strict unsupported philosophy. Riders must carry their own equipment and travel entirely under their own power, without support vehicles, outside assistance or public transport. Food, water and mechanical supplies must be obtained from commercial businesses or provided by the organisers. Riding in pairs or trios is permitted, with drafting allowed within those groups.
The Unknown Race also has a charitable purpose: proceeds from the event are donated to charities selected by the first finishers in the solo female, solo male and pairs categories.
