Event description

Balutia is a self-supported gravel ultra that explores one of Spain’s most overlooked regions. Covering 870 kilometres with approximately 13,000 metres of climbing, the route follows the ancient frontier of Balutia, a historic Arab province that once stretched across Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Extremadura.

Starting and finishing in Pozoblanco (Córdoba), riders complete a loop through the vast dehesas of Los Pedroches, the forests of the Alcudia and Guadiato valleys, the wetlands of La Serena, and the rugged hills of the Sierra Morena. The course blends fast gravel roads, forgotten farm tracks, quiet secondary roads, and winding mountain passes, showcasing a side of southern Spain rarely experienced by cyclists.

Balutia follows a strict self-supported philosophy. Riders must navigate, manage food and accommodation, repair mechanicals, and reach each mandatory checkpoint without outside assistance. Success depends on pacing, preparation, and making smart decisions over nearly six days of continuous riding.

More than just an ultra-distance race, Balutia is a journey through history. The route connects remote villages, abandoned railways, ancient paths, and landscapes shaped by centuries of human activity, creating an experience that is as much about exploration as endurance.

For riders seeking smooth gravel, remote scenery, and a thoughtfully designed adventure away from Spain’s better-known cycling destinations, Balutia offers one of the most distinctive gravel ultras on the European calendar.
