Illyrian Loop is a 650 km unsupported bikepacking adventure through the rugged mountains and remote landscapes of northern Albania. Organised by Seven Serpents, the route starts and finishes in Shkodër, taking riders through the Albanian Alps, dramatic valleys and challenging mountain terrain. With approximately 14,000 metres of elevation gain, it is a demanding challenge designed for experienced off-road cyclists.
The route combines gravel tracks, secondary roads and demanding mountain climbs, passing through spectacular locations including Theth, Lake Koman and the surrounding Albanian countryside. Riders can expect rough surfaces, steep gradients and remote sections where good bike handling and reliable equipment are essential. The organisers recommend a gravel bike or mountain bike with wide tyres, ideally 45 mm or larger.
Illyrian Loop follows a strict unsupported format. Riders must navigate independently and manage their own food, water, accommodation and mechanical repairs. There are no personal support vehicles or private resupply services, although commercial shops, restaurants and accommodation can be used along the route.
The 2027 edition starts on 26 April in Shkodër, with a time limit until 30 April at 22:00. The route offers a challenging introduction to Albania’s spectacular backcountry and a memorable adventure for riders looking for technical gravel, big climbs and true self-sufficiency.
