Event description

Mines & Dunes is the successor to the long-running Morocco-BikeAdventure, a single-stage, unsupported bikepacking event starting in Tangier and finishing in the desert town of Boudnib, deep in Morocco's eastern interior. The Road edition covers approximately 1,520 kilometers with around 21,000 meters of elevation gain, entirely on paved surfaces, taking riders from the bustling northern port city through the Rif Mountains and into the Middle and High Atlas, where passes reach above 2,700 meters. One of the route's most striking features is the abandoned Ahouli mines, a sprawling industrial relic that gives the event its name and a haunting visual reminder of Morocco's mining history, before the route eventually descends into the desert landscapes near the finish.

After leaving the modern bustle of Tangier behind, riders quickly find themselves in remote terrain far from typical tourist routes, passing through isolated mountain and mining villages that see very few international visitors. The Sahara-adjacent finish near Boudnib brings scorching sun, dramatic desert scenery, and striking land art installations along the way, including pieces by German artist Hannsjörg Voth. Organized by Transbike Adventures, the same team behind the original Morocco-BikeAdventure, NorthCape4000, and the Iberica-Traversa series, Mines & Dunes is designed to take about a week, with no fixed time limit for completion.
