What to Expect on The Reset Brevet

The Reset Brevet takes riders deep into the rugged landscapes of Central Otago, New Zealand, following a challenging loop through mountain ranges, remote station tracks and historic gold-mining country. Starting and finishing in Wānaka, the route links the Dunstan Mountains, St Bathans and the Serpentine, combining remote backcountry riding with some seriously demanding terrain.

There are two route options. The flagship Reset 550 covers 550 km with 9,100 metres of elevation gain, while the shorter Reset 370 offers 370 km and 5,500 metres of climbing. Both routes feature rocky double-track, gravel back roads, occasional tarmac, singletrack and substantial hike-a-bike sections. A mountain bike is strongly recommended, with a rigid, hardtail or cross-country full-suspension setup suitable for the terrain.

The route crosses exposed high country where weather and resupply can become serious considerations. February conditions are often hot and dry, but riders may also encounter strong winds, rain, hail or snow at higher elevations. Some stretches have very limited water availability, requiring careful planning and sufficient supplies before heading into remote sections.

The Reset is a genuine self-supported brevet rather than a conventional race. There are no staffed checkpoints, support vehicles, organised food stops or finish celebrations. Riders must carry their own equipment, manage their own resupply and navigate the complete course under their own power. Solo participation and pairs are permitted, with pairs required to ride together throughout.
