Fat Viking is a winter ultra-endurance fatbike race held in Geilo, in the Norwegian highlands. Taking place in the middle of winter, the event challenges riders to navigate snow-covered trails and roads in freezing conditions, where staying warm and making good decisions are just as important as physical fitness.
The main event covers 150 km, with shorter 100 km and 50 km options for riders looking for a less demanding challenge. The route follows a changing network of snowmobile tracks, dogsled trails, winter roads and groomed cross-country ski paths around Geilo, Skurdalen and Dagali. Snow and weather conditions influence the course, which is normally published only one week before the start.
Fat Viking follows a self-supported format: riders must carry their own equipment and cannot receive outside assistance. GPS navigation is compulsory, and participants need to be prepared for sections of soft snow where pushing the bike may be necessary. Checkpoints offer basic food, hot drinks and heated indoor spaces where riders can rest.
The 150 km distance is also an official qualifier for the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Riders who finish within 32 hours complete one of the required qualifying events for the Alaskan race.
The 2027 edition takes place on 30 January, with all distances starting together in Geilo.

A Fat Bike is the right tool for Fat Viking. Set it up with 4.0-5.0" Tubeless rubber and gear it low — a 28-30T (1x) chainring and 10-52T cassette will keep you spinning on the steeper sections.
Expect a Beginner-tier challenge at Fat Viking — fairly flat climbing over seriously technical, unforgiving terrain throughout, with cool weather typical for the time of year.
Fat Viking takes place on January 30, 2027. That puts it in winter, so cold-weather gear and shorter daylight hours are part of the planning.
