Atacama Spirits Gravel Race

Atacama Spirits Gravel Race is a 650 km ultra-endurance stage race through the spectacular Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Starting in the coastal region around Taltal, the event takes riders across remote desert landscapes towards the Andes, combining approximately 8,000 metres of climbing with some of the most extreme environments in South America.

Route and terrain

The five-stage route crosses the coastal desert, vast open plains and high-altitude Andean landscapes. Riders encounter remote gravel roads, rocky tracks, demanding climbs and dramatic changes in altitude. The final stage reaches approximately 5,000 metres above sea level, making altitude adaptation an important part of race preparation.

Supported desert challenge

Unlike unsupported bikepacking races, Atacama Spirits provides organised logistics and support throughout the event. The 2027 edition runs from 18–25 April, with five riding stages and a transition day. Participants travel through isolated parts of the Atacama, experiencing its unique landscapes, ancient settlements and exceptionally clear desert skies.

With extreme temperatures, dry conditions and significant altitude changes, this is a demanding challenge that tests both physical endurance and mental resilience. Atacama Spirits offers a distinctive gravel racing experience far beyond the usual cycling routes.
