Event description

The Mallee Blast 1000 is a self-supported gravel event organised by Desire Lines CC through the Mallee scrubland of Victoria, Australia — one of the country's most distinctive and challenging cycling environments. The route runs approximately 500 or 1,000 kilometres between Torquay on the Great Ocean Road coast and Swan Hill in the Murray-Darling Basin interior, passing through the flat, arid, and sparsely populated Mallee region. The Mallee is a unique biome dominated by multi-stemmed eucalyptus trees, red sandy soils, and enormous open skies that stretch to every horizon without interruption. There are no mountains here, but the relentless flatness combined with exposure to heat, wind, and long distances between services creates a different kind of difficulty — one that demands pacing, heat management, and deep reserves of mental endurance rather than climbing legs. The 1,000km distance makes it one of Australia's longer gravel challenges; the course is almost entirely unpaved and follows back-country dirt roads and station tracks that see almost no other traffic. Navigation is a genuine skill requirement, as few of the routes used are marked or signed. Water sources and resupply points are sparse and must be planned carefully, with riders typically carrying 3 to 5 litres of water between stops in the hotter sections. The event is typically held in November, which in Victoria means spring warmth that can tip toward genuine heat in the Mallee interior. Desire Lines CC designs routes with a strong sense of place, and the Mallee Blast reflects a genuine love of the overlooked landscapes of Australia's agricultural interior.
