What to Expect on Mozarabe Adventure

Mozárabe Adventure is a 317 km self-supported ultra-cycling challenge through the contrasting landscapes of Almería, in southern Spain. Starting and finishing at Almería Cathedral, the route follows historic sections of the Mozarabic Way of St. James, combining desert tracks, mountain climbs and coastal roads. With approximately 4,500 metres of elevation gain and a 36-hour time limit, it offers a demanding adventure for experienced endurance cyclists.

Route and terrain

The journey begins in Almería before heading into the spectacular Tabernas Desert, one of Europe’s most distinctive arid landscapes. Riders then face a major climb towards the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, reaching over 2,000 metres above sea level. The route continues along sections of the historic El Argar route before descending towards the Mediterranean coast and crossing the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The circular course eventually returns to Almería, finishing near the iconic English Cable.

Self-supported challenge

Mozárabe Adventure follows a self-supported format. Participants must manage their own food, hydration and equipment, purchasing supplies in villages along the route or carrying them independently. Personal outside assistance is prohibited, and riders must follow the official GPS track throughout the event.

The organisers provide a satellite tracking device, detailed roadbook, live tracking and an incident reporting channel. With 36 hours to complete the course, riders must balance climbing, nutrition and rest while navigating the remote and exposed landscapes of Almería.
