Trans Balkan Race is an approximately 1,400 km self-supported bikepacking race across the rugged landscapes of the Balkans. Starting near Trieste, Italy, the route crosses Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro before finishing in Risan, on the Bay of Kotor. With more than 30,000 metres of elevation gain, it is a demanding adventure through the remote mountain ranges of the Dinaric Alps.
The course follows a challenging network of gravel roads, mountain tracks, forest paths and remote backroads, taking riders deep into the Balkan wilderness. Expect long climbs, rocky surfaces, isolated valleys and spectacular mountain scenery. The route combines physically demanding terrain with limited resupply opportunities, making careful preparation and efficient navigation essential.
Much of the journey takes place away from major settlements, with riders crossing some of the most remote areas of the western Balkans. The constantly changing terrain and weather conditions add another layer of difficulty.
Trans Balkan Race follows a strict self-supported format. Participants must manage their own navigation, food, water, accommodation and mechanical repairs without personal support or outside assistance. Riders need to be prepared for long periods between resupply points and changing conditions in the mountains.
With approximately nine days available to complete the challenge, the event demands excellent endurance, self-reliance and careful sleep management. More than a cycling race, Trans Balkan Race is an opportunity to explore the wild and lesser-known landscapes of the Balkans through one of Europe’s most demanding bikepacking adventures.
