Edition Zero Gravel brings together a range of gravel challenges in Waimate, South Canterbury, on New Zealand’s South Island. Organised by Great Kiwi Gravel, the event offers four course options, taking riders across the rolling rural landscapes surrounding the town, with a mix of open farmland, gravel roads and paved sections.
The flagship Mains course covers 248 km with approximately 3,500 m of elevation gain, with around 75% of the route on gravel. For those looking for a shorter challenge, the event also offers the 163 km Entrée, 85 km Snack and 53 km Taster courses. The longer routes demand endurance, confident bike handling and GPX navigation, while the shorter options provide an accessible introduction to gravel riding.
Edition Zero is an organised gravel event rather than a fully unsupported bikepacking race. Aid stations provide water, some nutrition and medical assistance, while a drop-bag service allows riders to access their own supplies along the course. Personal and team support is not permitted. All routes finish with laps of the Victoria Park Velodrome, before riders come together at the event village to celebrate the day.
