Montenegro Mountain Madness

Montenegro Mountain Madness is an unsupported bikepacking challenge through the rugged heart of the Balkans, linking the remote mountain landscapes of Montenegro with the dramatic scenery of its Adriatic coast. The route crosses the Dinaric Alps, passing high ridges, deep river canyons, alpine pastures and traditional mountain huts known as katuns.

The 2027 route covers approximately 740 km with 17,000 metres of elevation gain, with a five-day time limit. Around 60% of the course is off-road, combining rocky tracks and demanding mountain terrain with paved secondary roads. The challenge lies less in technical riding than in the relentless climbing, long distances between resupply points and the remoteness of the landscape.

Riders travel through Montenegro’s wild interior, crossing the highlands and the dramatic canyons of the Tara and Piva rivers before reaching the Adriatic coast. The route offers a changing mix of mountain wilderness, rugged trails and coastal scenery, with limited opportunities to restock supplies along the way.

The event follows a fixed route and shared start and finish, but riders manage their own food, accommodation, navigation and mechanical issues. Participants can enter solo or in pairs, with a Rally Formula option also planned for 2027 for riders who want to connect with others on the journey.
